Sexuality in the elderly: knowledge, myths and realities
Keywords:
Older adult, Sexual health, SexualityAbstract
Introduction: Sexuality is an intrinsic and essential quality of the human personality, present throughout life. However, in older adults, vulnerabilities associated with age, diseases and beliefs may negatively affect these manifestations. Objective: to characterize sexuality in older adults of the Luyanó Polyclinic and Lawton Polyclinic Health Areas. Methods: a cross-sectional descriptive observational study was carried out in two health areas of the Diez de Octubre municipality, Havana, during the second semester of 2022. Thirty-two older adults between 60 and 70 years of age of both sexes participated, using the mailbox method to collect data qualitatively. The open-ended questions addressed topics such as myths about sexuality, sexual relations with younger people, and experiences of abuse, which allows identifying knowledge and attitudes about sexuality in this age group. Results: this research revealed that older adults had little known perceptions about sexuality, showed insufficiencies in the definition and knowledge of the subject, more generally among men. It highlighted the urgent need for educational and promotional actions to improve their sexual health and well-being. Conclusions: sexuality in older adults of the Luyanó Polyclinic and Lawton Polyclinic Health Areas was characterized, revealing the urgent need for educational actions for older adults to acquire knowledge and skills that will allow them to achieve optimal sexual health.
