Abstract

Introduction: Visual electrophysiology records electrical activity generated along the visual pathways in response to a stimulus specific to each technique. The pattern electroretinogram represents the central retinal response to a structured stimulus, allowing for the differentiation between neuropathies and maculopathies.

Objective: To determine normative values for the pattern electroretinogram in adults at the visual electrodiagnosis laboratory of Prof. Rafael Estrada González Institute of Neurology and Neurosurgery.

Methods: A prospective descriptive study was conducted. Pattern electroretinograms were performed on 28 individuals (56 healthy eyes), selected during clinical consultations over the course of a year based on predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Examinations were carried out according to international standards. Demographic variables and parameters specific to electrophysiological study. Amplitude and latency of the main components (N35, P50, and N95) were analyzed.

Results: Mean latencies at 60 minutes of arc were 30.1 ms for N35, 51.9 ms for P50, and 97.4 ms for N95; values were similar in both eyes. Amplitude values showed greater variability. The N35-P50 amplitude ranged from a minimum of 1.0 µV to a maximum of 7.0 µV, while the P50-N95 amplitude ranged from 2.0 µV to 11.0 µV.

Conclusions: The normative values obtained in this electrophysiological study constitute a valid reference tool for other visual electrophysiology laboratories in the country's ophthalmology centers.
