Characterization of Bi-Atrial Function in Patients with Atrial Fibrillation Restored to Sinus Rhythm

Introduction: Atrial fibrillation is a common heart rhythm disorder, accounting for nearly one-third of hospital admissions for cardiac arrhythmia. Its true incidence is underestimated due to the high percentage of asymptomatic cases, and it is often diagnosed incidentally.
Objective: To characterize bi-atrial function via echocardiography in patients with atrial fibrillation after the restoration of sinus rhythm following pharmacological or electrical cardioversion.
Methods: An observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted at the Cardiology Department of Celia Sánchez Manduley Provincial Clinical-Surgical Hospital in Granma, Cuba, from 2020 to 2022. The study population consisted of all patients admitted to the cardiology ward with recent-onset atrial fibrillation (n = 100). Data analysis involved descriptive statistics, specifically the calculation of absolute frequencies and percentage-based relative frequencies.
Results: Males predominated (72%), and the 55–64 age group was the most affected (25%). Pharmacological cardioversion was the most frequently used medical treatment for patients with atrial fibrillation (61%). Echocardiographic parameters fell within normal ranges following the cardioversion procedure.
Conclusions: Atrial fibrillation poses a challenge for the medical community. It is more common after the fifth decade of life, and pharmacological cardioversion is the most widely used medical treatment. Echocardiographic parameters remain within normal limits, indicating stable bi-atrial function following cardioversion.
