Keywords:
history; evolution; hygiene and epidemiologyAbstract
Introduction: The development strategy for human resource training is a factor of utmost importance in Cuban policy regarding the creation and consolidation of the health system.
Objective: To describe the historical evolution and development of training for hygiene and epidemiology technicians and technologists in Cuba, considering the new challenges and epidemiological problems facing not only Cuba today.
Methods: Documents regarding public health and epidemiology served as theoretical sources. A review of curricula was conducted, and a combination of empirical methods was employed.
Results: The training of medical science professionals in the country has a long history and a rich university tradition, dating back to the founding of the University of Havana in 1728, where medicine was included among the degree programs offered. The stages of training for these health professionals are characterized, and the specific features of the curricula are highlighted.
Conclusions: The historical evolution of training for health technicians and technologists in the field of hygiene and epidemiology has kept pace with the new challenges and the hygiene- and epidemiology-related problems facing the modern world. The current model for the bachelor’s degree in Hygiene and Epidemiology is discussed, and the social impact of the program's redesign, which has met the demands of Cuban health services, is established.
