ABSTRACT:
The benefits of cochlear implants in children with associated pathologies are very well known. Nevertheless from 30 to 40% of these are multi-disabled children, often partnering with cerebral palsy associated to severe motor disorders that affect speech and language.
This paper deals on the clinical and audiological findings of disability in a pediatric patient, treated at the National Cochlear Implant Group from 10 month of life. Sensor neural hearing loss was bilateral and profound accompanied by strabismus, dysarthria and motor deficits predominance of left-side. He received a cochlear implant at 5 years of life achieving a hearing gain that allowed him to develop oral communication, and improved speech intelligibility, allowing adequate academic and social integration.
