Introduction: the improvement of the professional performance of Nuclear Medicine technologists, especially during radioactive waste management, is essential to avoid the harmful effects of these substances. Objective: to describe the current state of the professional performance of Nuclear Medicine technologists in radioactive waste management. Method: the research was carried out in the Nuclear Medicine service of the "María Curie" Oncology Teaching Hospital of Camagüey province. The information was obtained through the application of a survey and the observation of a population of 12 technologists. Results: the weaknesses were related to: cognitive deficiencies in the technologists on aspects related to radioactive waste management; inadequate execution of procedures for the reception, classification, transport, storage and final disposal of radioactive waste. Strengths: positive evaluations regarding the need and usefulness of the subject; interest in joining professionalization actions aimed at improving professional performance; willingness on the part of those involved to collaborate in the process. Conclusions: the current state of the professional performance of Nuclear Medicine technologists was diagnosed. We identified weaknesses and strengths to be considered in order to improve the professional performance of Nuclear Medicine technologists in radioactive waste management.
