Plummer-Vinson syndrome is a rare condition, more common in middle-aged women, characterized by prolonged iron deficiency anemia, nutritional deficiencies, genetic predisposition and autoimmune factors. The depletion of some iron-dependent oxidative enzymes would produce a series of atrophic alterations in the muscles responsible for swallowing, with atrophy of the esophageal mucosa and accumulation of epithelial debris forming membranes. The clinical presentation of this pathology is difficulty in swallowing, dryness in the oral mucosa with cracks in the labial commissures. The diagnosis is made by radiological study of the esophagus, with barium contrast and endoscopy. Treatment consists of endoscopic elimination by means of dilatations with Savary-Guilliard plugs and adequate nutrition with vitamin and iron intake to overcome anemia. The rarity of this condition motivated the authors to socialize the case through this report.Downloads
