Introduction: ciguatera is a form of food poisoning caused by the consumption of marine fish and shellfish that have accumulated ciguatoxins in the tissues. Objective: to characterize pediatric patients treated for food poisoning with ciguatoxins. Methods: a descriptive observational study, case series type, was carried out at the Pediatric Hospital of Camagüey, during the years 2012-2022. The universe consisted of 26 patients and the following variables were studied: age group, sex, type of fish consumed (species), presentation of the first symptoms, clinical signs and symptoms, risk factors identified and treatment received. The Scientific Council and the Ethics Committee of the hospital approved the study, in addition to taking into account the principles of the Declaration of Helsinki. Results: patients aged 16-18 years (38.6 %), male (53.9 %), with a history of barracuda consumption (46.2 %) predominated. The main signs and symptoms were classified as neurological, cardiovascular and gastrointestinal; represented by paresthesia (46.1 %), bradycardia (42.3 %) and abdominal pain (100 %) respectively. Consumption of fish without sanitary analysis (100.0 %) was the main risk factor, while treatment with mannitol was indicated in 61.5 % of the cases.. Conclusions: the population studied was characterized by a preponderance of advanced pediatric age, male sex, associated with barracuda consumption and the presence of gastrointestinal alterations that required symptomatic treatment.Downloads
