Eating habits in undergraduate health technology students

Abstract

Introduction: currently worldwide, Food-Based Dietary Guidelines are established to improve eating behaviors, physical activity and healthy lifestyles. Research on dietary choices, patterns and behaviors in college students and older adults has been increasing in recent years. The diets of college students change when they enter college. Objective: to describe the eating habits of students of the School of Health Technology of the University of Medical Sciences of Havana. Methods: an observational, descriptive, cross-sectional, descriptive study was carried out in May 2023, in students of the School of Health Technology of the University of Medical Sciences of Havana. The universe of the study included the 1320 students of the School of Health Technology. Of these, a sample of 87 students selected by simple random sampling was studied, with a reliability of 95%. Results: regarding the knowledge of the guidelines, 43% reported knowing them, while the remaining 57% denied it. In relation to the consumption of fruits and/or vegetables, the majority expressed not to do so and not to know the guidelines. Fifty-seven percent of the participants reported doing physical exercise for at least 30 minutes, three days a week. Conclusions: the eating habits of the students were described, the results of which allow us to unveil the aspects that require greater efforts in nutritional education.
