Pediatric patients hospitalized for surveillance of hepatitis of unknown cause

Abstract

Introduction: surveillance for hepatitis of unknown cause and basic precautionary measures are the best tools to prevent or develop severe symptoms. Objective: to characterize pediatric patients hospitalized for surveillance of hepatitis of unknown cause. Methods: descriptive observational study, cross-sectional, case series type, carried out at the Pediatric Hospital of Camagüey, during the period from May to September 2022. The population consisted of 25 patients, once the selection criteria were applied. The following variables were studied: age group, sex, risk factors, signs and symptoms, liver function tests, laboratory values, results of molecular studies and state at discharge. A statistical package was used to process the data, which were expressed in absolute values and percentages. Results: the predominant age group was 15-18 years old (36.0 %), male sex (76.0 %), who consumed unboiled and unchlorinated water (48.0 %), had jaundice (96.0 %), fever (92.0 %) and choluria (80.0 %), while in 64.0 % glutamic-pyruvic transaminase < 500 U/L and hepatitis A virus (16.0 %) were identified. Conclusions: pediatric patients hospitalized for surveillance of hepatitis of unknown cause were characterized, in which the etiology was confirmed, while all of them presented satisfactory evolution with clinical improvement at discharge and epidemiological discharge.
