Maternal factors associated with low birth weight. “Fe del Valle Ramos" Hospital, Granma

Introduction: low birth weight is one of the most important causes of perinatal and infant morbidity and mortality. Objective: to identify some maternal factors associated to low birth weight at "Fe del Valle Ramos" hospital. Methods: a descriptive, observational and cross-sectional study was carried out on maternal factors associated to low birth weight at the "Fe del Valle Ramos" hospital in Manzanillo-Granma in 2022. The universe consisted of 185 mothers who had children diagnosed with low birth weight. Results: mothers between 20 and 35 years old predominated (80 %); with a gestational age over 37 weeks (64.3 %) and a weight gain between 8 and 12 kg for 58.4 %. Pre-eclampsia was the disease typical of pregnancy in 45.1 % of the units of analysis and the diseases associated with pregnancy; vaginal infections stood out in 94.5 %. Conclusions: there are several maternal factors associated with low birth weight, among them are age under 20 years and over 35 years, cervicovaginal infections, diseases associated with pregnancy: hypertensive disorders, gestational diabetes, among others. Inadequate weight gain and preterm delivery also influence low birth weight.
