Knowledge about breastfeeding in postpartum women at “Fe del Valle Ramos” Hospital

Introduction: breastfeeding provides the formation of mother-child bonding, which is the basis for the child's future security and independence. Objetive: to describe the knowledge of the post partum women about breastfeeding. Method: a descriptive, observational and cross-sectional study was carried out at the Fe del Valle Ramos Gynecobstetric Hospital in Manzanillo, Granma province, during the period October-December 2022. The population consisted of 36 patients who were admitted to the institution, who gave informed consent. Results: according to age groups, postpartum women aged 16 to 19 years prevailed (44.4%); 100% of the patients obtained information on breastfeeding through the radio, television and the maternity hospital; there was a predominance of postpartum patients who reported that they did use exclusive breastfeeding (83.3%); only 16.6% knew about the correct posture of the mother; 33.3% knew the correct posture of the baby and 19.4% did not have sufficient knowledge about the correct breast latch; 72.2% of the mothers showed low knowledge about breastfeeding. Conclusions: there is low knowledge about breastfeeding, adolescents are the population group that needs more attention. Most of the mothers used exclusive breastfeeding. Only a minority of the women had the necessary knowledge about breastfeeding techniques.
