Epidemiology of unintentional injuries in pediatric patients up to five years of age

Abstract

Introduction: Unintentional injuries in pediatrics constitute a global health problem. In Cuba, they occupy the first place in mortality at these ages. Objective: Describe the epidemiology of unintentional injuries in pediatric patients up to five years of age. Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out at the Pediatric Hospital of Camaguey, during the first quarter of 2022. The universe was made up of 65 patients, while the sample was made up of the 50 who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The variables were studied: age group, sex, municipality of residence, need for admission and hospital stay, type of injury, month and place of occurrence, as well as its severity. Results: The age group of 1-2 years predominated (42.0 %), as did the female sex (56.0 %). The municipality of Camaguey contributed the highest number of cases (42.0 %), while 100.0 % of the patients were admitted and 84.0 % stayed for less than 72 hours. The most frequent injury was the ingestion of medications (42.0 %). In general, 96,0 % corresponded to minor injuries and 4.0 % to serious injuries. Conclusions: Unintentional injuries are more common in the first and second year of life. The fundamental cause is the ingestion of medications purchased at home that can cause serious injuries. Prevention actions must be directed in this sense.
